About the Film

In 1998, Malaika Jules was a sophomore in High School. To pass time, she took an old film camera and took pictures around her neighborhood in Leimert Park. At night, she attended a Photography class at Venice High School, where she studied darkroom and studio with Larry Shapiro. For years, the photographs in this collection were  forgotten; boxed away in a 3 ring binder in Malaika's mom's garage. A day of spring cleaning  in 2018 made way for the photographs to be found 20 years later and now, Malaika is proud to share with you her images of a community that has changed drastically since the photos were taken.  Herein lies a glimpse of Leimert Park in 1998.
